When crisis crashed in 2008-2009, most companies had “pull their belts”. Nevertheless, according to a survey conducted in the United Kingdom, more than 60% of firms thought there were two things to be invested in: leadership training and team building. Why did they attribute such an important role to these processes at this time and how do team building practices evolve today?
Paul’s turn in managing the workforce: the Hawthorne research
Let’s start with the explanation of the stove, as labor development has developed a lot in the last century. The previously dominated Taylor approach – that man is a rational, mechanically working “work tool” to be treated as a robot working individual – questioned first among the Hawthorne research during which Elton Mayo was examined between 1924-1933 in the USA ( quite exactly at Western Electric’s hawthorne plant, hence the name). Mayo was wondering how work conditions affect workers’ performance, and there was no reason to wonder at the beginning of the experiment: they found that better conditions (such as light intensity, frequent breaks, etc.) improved performance. The surprise came when it turned out that if the original, worse working conditions were restored, performance would increase. What is the explanation for this? It’s simple: as the conversations and interviews that were under the auspices of the research were felt by the workers, they really did deal with them, their opinions mattered, so they became more motivated. From this point, occupation of people as “human beings” gained momentum, as thorough research also found that the key to high performance lies in the formation of strong group identity based on human relationships.
The human relations movement
Based on the aforementioned Hawthorne research, the Human Relations Movement was launched, which is the principle that workers are the most effective,
if they are motivated,
if they identify with the company’s goals,
and they are an integral part of the community.
Today, almost every successful company has incorporated this principle into day-to-day operations, leading leadership training and team building to a major role in the corporate world.
About team building in a nutshell

and last but not least, the good working spirit and good team spirit.
Taking all this into account, it is clear that the team building plays a prominent role in every life-oriented organization’s life, as a well-organized team building program, a shared, eventful event has a fairly good impact on the team.
What is the good team building?
After all, the question may be right: is it a good team building? No, the climax of the right team building is not when we look for a timid colleague after a sufficient amount of alcohol on the table while we ourselves are about the functioning of the universe and the theological meaning of our existence is wrapped in broad pupils. While there is no doubt that such an event can be memorable, it is more important that team building builds on cohesion among the staff, while striving to achieve a common goal together. (One of the theses of social psychology is that it is easiest to bring together moderately friendly people when designating a common goal.)
